Meet Nigel J Hughes
Nigel J Hughes is a former NHS professional whose journey from the wards of Britain’s hospitals to the world of children’s literature is as remarkable as it is heartening. Hailing from Derby, with a Welsh father and an English-Welsh mother, Nigel remains deeply proud of his heritage and has made Staffordshire his home for more than forty years. As a cancer survivor living with arthritis and diabetes, he wryly refers to himself as “a walking miracle”, embracing each new day with characteristic British resilience and good humour.
Never far from his side is his devoted border collie, Loki. When not penning stories, Nigel delights in watching cricket or football, treading the boards as an actor, and lending his presence as a supporting artist in major productions. His writing nooks range from a snug home office in the heart of Staffordshire to a sun-dappled retreat on the island of Skiathos, Greece. Ever the soft-hearted Brit, Nigel has long championed the rescue and rehoming of bears and soft toys—many of whom find new adventures as characters in his tales.
Drawing upon a wealth of life experience and a quintessentially British wit, Nigel J Hughes conjures magical worlds brimming with warmth, gentle humour, and hope—inviting children and families alike to share in his enduring love of story.
